Vladimir Safatle: Another kratos for the demos

Universidade de São Paulo

Institut za filozofiju i društvenu teoriju, sala na IV spratu u 12 časova

We know a social diagnosis which refers to a deficit of popular sovereignty in our representative democracies. This diagnosis insists on a kind of „democracy without demos“ as the major risk for our contemporary political experience. However, maybe we are faced with the problem which is more structural in kind: maybe there is not only an absence of the demos that we need to think about, but also the need to rethink the very notion of the force in politics. Which was, up till now, the force of the people in democracy? Could we say that the notion of the people was, until now, dependent on the concept of force structured upon a metaphysical concept of identity? And what should be the force that would develop itself beyond such a horizon?
