Igor Cvejić and Olga Nikolić Engagement and Joint Perspective

The main aim of this lecture is to explain what is joint perspective, how it is formed and why it is important for engagement. We pose the question of whether and in what way is an engagement of someone (or a group) before (or with) somebody else (or another group, which responds to the engagement by joining in it or continuing it) a plural agency (with the other) and what is the role of the other in the engagement. First, we will present the phenomenological concept of perspective and different types of sharing of perspectives (habitual, evaluative and cognitive). We will then present the main ideas of social ontology about the ways to explain joint action (as coordinated shared-intentions, „we-modes“, or by plural subject) and go on to explain plural agency via joint evaluative perspective. In the third part of the lecture, we will combine the concept of joint evaluative perspective and engaged perspective to explain the status of engagement with respect to this question. Finally, we will describe the dynamics of agreement and disagreement of individual and collective perspectives in the process of forming a joint perspective through communication.

Igor Cvejić is a research fellow at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory. He defended his Ph.D. thesis on Kant’s theory of feeling at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. His research interests include emotions, Kant, aesthetics, philosophy of social engagement, and collective intentionality.

Olga Nikolić is a research assistant at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory and a Ph.D. student at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. She defended her MA thesis on Husserl’s theory of sense at the Institute for Philosophy, KU Leuven. Her research interests include phenomenology, philosophy of science, social and political philosophy, and engagement studies.
